Huge fire at army ammunition depot in Maharashtra, 17 army men killed

At least 17 army personnel were killed and 19 others injured when a huge fire broke out at the military ammunition depot at Pulgaon in Wardha district in Maharashtra in the wee hours on Monday. The dead include two officers and 15 Defence Security Corps (DSC) jawans. 

 

Extent of fire  
According to locals fire was triggered off after an explosion and spread after second explosion. Fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the fire. The main fire has been extinguished, said the defense officials. However they have not ruled out secondary fires and explosions. People of nearby villages have been evacuated for safety. A probe has been ordered.

 

Defence Minister to visit
The Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar is likely to visit the site. The ammunition depot at Pulagon is among the largest repository of ammunition and ordnance in India.
