Bengali's alluring dish is Hilsa cooked in Sorshe (mustard).

 

Sorshe Ilish is very popular in West Bengal and Bangladesh.

 

Dynamite News brings you the recipe of Sorshe Ilish.

 

Ingredients
Hilsa                         600gms
Mustard oil                4 tablespoon
Mustard seeds          2 tablespoon
Green chillies            4-5 pieces
Ginger garlic paste    2 teaspoon
Tomato                       1 cup 
Panch phoron             2 teaspoon
Red chilli powder         1 teaspoon
Turmeric                      1 teaspoon
Salt                               to taste
Water                            ½ cup

 

 

Method 
 Marinate the Hilsa fish in salt and turmeric.

 

Soak mustard and green chilli for an hour, and then blend them together into a paste.

 

Heat mustard oil in a pan and add panch phoron (spice blend of fenugreek seed, nigella seed, cumin seed, black mustard seed and fennel seed). Now add ginger garlic paste in the pan and add the mustard. Let it cook for a while.  

 

Now add red chilli powder and turmeric, add the fish with chopped green chili and salt. Let it cook and add the tomatoes in it and add water. 

 

Stir well and with closed lids keep it under a slow flame. Keep it till the fish is properly cooked.

 

 

Serve it hot with steamed rice.
