North India is slowly slipping from monsoon warmth to a cool, misty calm. IMD hints at an early start to winter temperature dips in major cities. Is this the season’s first real chill?
From monsoon to mist, early winter chill grips North India
New Delhi: As mid-October sets in, most parts of North India are witnessing a pleasant transition from the humid monsoon season to the cooler pre-winter phase. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that rainfall activity has reduced significantly across plains, paving the way for clearer skies, comfortable days, and cooler nights.
The dip in temperature is expected to continue through the coming week, marking the gradual onset of the winter season.

The Delhi-NCR region is experiencing sunny yet comfortable days with maximum temperatures hovering around 31- 33°C, while mornings and evenings have turned pleasantly cool, averaging 19- 21°C. The humidity levels have dropped after recent showers, improving comfort levels.
However, air quality remains a concern as the AQI fluctuates between “moderate” and “poor”, largely due to reduced wind speed and post-harvest stubble burning in neighboring states.

IMD forecasts mostly clear skies for the next few days, though early morning haze and light fog could appear. With the festive season approaching, authorities have advised citizens to take precautions against rising pollution levels.
Across Uttar Pradesh, the withdrawal of the monsoon has brought an end to consistent rainfall, leaving behind dry but pleasant weather. Daytime temperatures range between 30- 33°C, while nights cool down to 18- 20°C. Many districts, including Lucknow, Kanpur, and Varanasi, are witnessing misty mornings and light fog during dawn hours.
The IMD predicts no significant rainfall over the state for at least a week. Farmers, however, are content with this pattern as the monsoon was largely normal, ensuring healthy crop growth. The coming weeks are expected to bring a further dip in temperature, especially in western and central UP.
In the hill state of Uttarakhand, temperatures are dropping steadily, with daytime highs around 22- 24°C and nighttime lows dipping to 12–14°C in places like Dehradun, Nainital, and Almora.

Higher reaches, including Kedarnath and Badrinath, may witness light rain or early snowfall as western disturbances begin influencing Himalayan weather patterns. The clear skies have boosted tourist and pilgrimage activities, especially during the Char Dham Yatra. Authorities have urged travelers to carry warm clothing and stay updated on local forecasts.
Overall, North India is enjoying a calm, comfortable weather phase. The coming days are likely to remain dry with gradual cooling. Residents can expect a beautiful blend of crisp mornings, warm afternoons, and serene evenings- the perfect prelude to winter.
